Dr Aamir Khalil of Four Paws told the news agency that the animal welfare group’s team is delayed by weather conditions in Turkey this week. They will come to the site on Wednesday morning.

Plans were made for the operation before it went place

It is believed that this surgery would be done under a “standing sedation” because it will not require radiotherapy, which is usually the case with patients who have cancer.

The female elephants in Karachi Zoo, Madhubala and Noor Jehan, have been suffering from damaged and infected tusks for several years.

The pain causes them to continuously act out, stressing the elephants further and detracting attention away from the zoo’s main draw–the male elephant Raju.

A team from the charity Four Paws first observed dead Thai elephants and found them to have severe tumour on their heads.

After lengthy examinations, the court initiated procedures that resulted in the deaths of 30 additional elephants within a month’s time.
